Q. WHERE DO I GET THE EMAIL ADDRESSES FROM?

If you don't already have a database of email addresses for your existing customers, prospective clients and business associates, here are some tips to help you get started.

  • Gather email addresses (and permission to contact) whenever possible

    When you meet a new client or prospect and are recording their information, ask for their email address as well. Similarly, you can solicit email addresses from your existing client base through invoices, statements, reports, surveys, feedback forms and more. Be sure to ask for an email address when you've got a customer or prospect on the phone for sales, customer service or support calls. Remind your employees to ask customers if they would like to receive your newsletter, receive special promotions or be notified of private sales and events.

  • Create an email sign-up page on your website

    Make it easy for your customers, prospects and associates to join your mailing list. Place your list sign-up on the homepage and other appropriate pages of your website, but whatever you do, don't hide it! Make it easy for site visitors to find and join your email list. To facilitate enrollment, ask for as little information as possible (consumers tend to be turned off by long forms), confirm that their personal information will not be sold and explain that they can decide to "opt-out" of further communications at any time.
